“WHOA!” Eric shouted, interrupting Matilda mid-sentence when Sam and Adaline walked into the room with the pack of puppies following along.

Ellie scrunched up her face. “Holy fuck, Sam. How is it even worse now? Damn.”

“Ellie, shh. Don’t. Shh. He’s the fucking Walker,” Eric murmured, head bowed, trying to drag Ellie to her feet and away with him, behind the couches.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” Ellie asked, shaking herself free of Eric. “He’s a fucking nerdy billionaire. Go sniff him!”

Charlie gasped, dropping his eyes immediately. “Eleanor, this is not a good time to be abrasive or assertive.”

She paused, looking at both men, and then glancing at Matilda. Matilda rolled her eyes.

“It’s just Sam. Same guy, more energy,” Matty explained.

“Ellie, do you know what the Walker is?” Eric muttered, head still bowed.

She shrugged, shaking her head.

Sam sighed. “My predecessors were destructive assholes. I’m still me—same nondestructive asshole you drank beer and trolled Matty’s ex-boyfriend with.”

“See? It’s fine. What the fuck is wrong with you both?” Ellie asked, baffled by their behavior.

“Seriously,” Matty said. “Give it a rest. The Walker shit is getting old. It’s fine. That’s Sam’s…Adaline. This is Ellie, Charlie, and Eric.”

“We can come back later if you need some time,” Sam offered, eyes downcast in humiliation.

“No,” Matty snarled. “You will not come back later. Charlie! Eric! NOW! Eyes up. Say hello. He’s still Sam.”

“Mistress,” Eric greeted Adaline with a nod, avoiding looking at Sam. “Ava, I would not be able to hold a circle with your other daughter.”

Adaline grinned at him, causing some of the tension in Eric’s shoulders to relax. “Hi.”

“I don’t intend to harm anyone at all, especially family and friends. Please don’t do this,” Sam mumbled without looking at anyone. “There’s no reason to be afraid of me.”

“What’s going on? What are you, Sam?” Ellie asked.

Sam snorted. “I’ll tell you what I am if you tell me what you are.”
